How to Compost at Home

If you’re looking for a way to reduce your food waste and minimize your carbon footprint, composting is the solution! Compost is organic material that can be used to help plants grow by adding it to the soil. This organic material can be made of food scraps and yard clippings that would typically end up in landfills. Instead, these usually discarded scraps can be put to better use, and it’s easier than you might think!

How to Start Composting From Home

You’ll start by making a compost pile. These compost piles can either be outdoors or indoors. If you have space in your backyard, make sure to select a dry and shady spot near a convenient water source. Add your materials as they are collected, making sure the large pieces are shredded or chopped smaller and moisten them periodically. Once you have this pile established, mix in grass clippings or other green waste and bury the food scraps under at least 10 inches of the compost material.

If you don’t have outdoor space or need something more concealed to place your compost in, consider buying a compost bin that can also be kept indoors. Always remember to keep track of what you put inside and keep it properly managed to avoid attracting bugs or rodents and minimizing any bad smells.

What Can I Add to my Compost?

Make sure you’re adding the right materials and scraps to your compost pile or bin. Here’s what’s best to save:

  • Vegetable waste
  • Fruit waste
  • Cooked founds without oil, meat, or dairy
  • Eggshells
  • Rice and grains
  • Coffee grounds
  • Teabags
  • Flowers
  • Plant prunings
  • Grass clippings

What are the Benefits of Composting?

Composting, simply put, is great for the environment! Here are some of the reasons why:

  • It lowers your carbon footprint and reduces methane emissions from landfills.
  • It helps moisten and enrich the soil by suppressing plant diseases and pests.
  • It minimizes the need for chemical fertilizers.
  • It helps in the production of beneficial bacteria that help create humus, a nutrient-filled organic material.
