How To Make Your Pumpkins Last

September 30, 2021

There’s nothing more classic autumn than a pumpkin! Not only are they delicious, but they also make the perfect decoration for your home’s landscape. Coming in many different shapes, sizes, colors, and even textures, you’re sure to find the perfect pumpkins to make you smile this fall and to dress your front yard.

Unfortunately, pumpkins don’t last for long, so these tips can help you keep your pumpkins from rotting:

Give it a bleach bath carefully.

Giving your pumpkin a good cleaning makes a big difference. Submerge your pumpkin into a bucket of water with ⅔ cups of bleach and leave it to soak for up to 24 hours.

Rehydrate your pumpkin daily.

Pumpkins need moisture, and they dry out and shrivel up easily. Using a spray bottle of water mixed with a few drops of bleach will keep it moist and ward off any mold and bacteria.

Apply some petroleum jelly.

Another way to keep your pumpkin moist is to apply petroleum jelly to its exterior and carved edges. Just be cautious not to put any candles in your pumpkin then, as the substance is flammable.

Store it in the refrigerator overnight.

When you’re not showing your jack-o-lantern off in front of your home, bring it inside, wrap it in a plastic bag, and put it in your fridge. If you don’t have room, try another cold and dark area of your house, such as the basement.

Don’t use real candles to light it.

The candle flame may look pretty as it flickers inside your pumpkin, but the heat over time is essentially cooking it, which increases the rotting process. Try using flickering, flameless candles, or glow sticks as an alternative.
