Peak Foliage Timeframes

When planning your trip, consider where the foliage is currently at or approaching its peak. The leaves further north will begin to change first, and the rest will gradually change as you move south. Here are the estimated peak times based on the region:

• Connecticut Northwest/Northeast Corners – October 3rd – 8th.
• Connecticut Eastern/Western Mid-State Counties – October 16th – 23rd.
• Shoreline and Lower Connecticut River Valley – October 24th – November 6th.

The areas along the Connecticut River, starting by the Long Island Sound’s mouth and going up, will hold its foliage for the longest.

Places to Visit

There are a diverse range of destinations across Connecticut that are perfect for leaf-peeping and enjoying all that nature has to offer this fall season. Consider visiting these New England hot spots to see all the bright, changing leaves:

• Talcott Mountain State Park – Find the Heublein Tower standing 165 feet tall in the middle of this Simsbury, CT state park. Take a hike on one of their trails to get some crisp, fresh air and see some of the best foliage.
• Mohawk State Forest – Make this scenic spot in Goshen, CT, the next stop of your foliage route. Spot plenty of wildlife, a gorgeous pond, and go hiking throughout this forest on a sunny fall day. 
• Haystack Mountain State Park – Drive up a windy mountain road through this park in Norfolk Historic District, CT, to find some of the best, rugged hiking trails. You’ll find some of the most colorful foliage and best lookout views at this park.
• Peoples State Forest – Located in Barkhamsted, CT, this forest has plenty of lookouts and trails to help you enjoy some of the state’s best views. Take the right path, and you’ll maybe find the lighthouse sight for some added excitement.
• Macedonia Brook State Park – Make your way to the top of Cobble Mountain at this park in Kent, CT. You’ll get some great views of the Harlem Valley into the Taconic and the Catskill Mountains when you reach the top.
• Pachaug State Forest – This massive, 26,477-acre forest is not surprisingly one of the largest in Connecticut and an excellent place for leaf-peeping. There are several trails and areas to explore, but if you want to get the best foliage views, try going to the Chapman Area where the Mount Misery overlook is situated. If you don’t want to hike to this location, try driving there!
