What SPF Sunscreen Should I Use?

July 21, 2020

We’re sure you’ve heard this before, but wearing sunscreen is so important! But do you know which SPF sunscreen you should be wearing and what is SPF anyway? Here’s what you need to know to make sure your skin is properly protected from the sun’s damaging rays:

What is SPF?

SPF, or sun protection factor, is what helps block your skin from the sun’s harmful radiation. It works by extending and multiplying your skin’s natural defense against the sun’s rays. So, if you are wearing an SPF of 30, the sunscreen is giving you 30 times more protection than your skin naturally can without any sunscreen on. SPF does not affect the time that the sunscreen lasts and you should always reapply at least every two hours no matter what.

Which SPF is Right For Me?

It is recommended to wear SPF every day for only occasional exposure to the sun. If you plan on being outdoors for an extended period of time, you should wear an SPF of 30 or higher. According to Consumer Reports, a lot of sunscreens don’t work as well as advertised so it’s safer to choose an SPF 50 sunscreen to ensure you’re being protected. Whatever sunscreen you choose, you should also make sure it says broad spectrum to ensure that it protects you from both UVA and UVB rays from the sun.

As well, it’s important to keep in mind that even if you don’t normally get sunburns, anytime you are outside your skin is exposed to harmful radiation that can hurt your health. Everyone should be wearing sunscreen when out in the sun!
