What Retaining Wall Material Should I Choose?

Retaining walls are stabilizing structures used to hold or retain soil to create flatter areas along sloped ground. There are a variety of materials to choose from when it comes to constructing retaining walls. The most important things to consider when choosing will include size, cost, durability, and look. Take a look at these different options and make sure you choose what’s best for your home and property:

Brick

A brick retaining wall might be a good option if you’re looking for a material that is super strong and durable. Bricks as well would be the ideal choice if you have a more traditional home and landscape. The drawbacks, however, would be that they are labor-intensive, and can require extra accommodations for drainage. But be assured that your brick retaining wall will last a very long time.

Concrete

A concrete retaining wall can either be poured or in blocks. With poured concrete, your retaining wall will be stronger than with blocks, but it has the potential to crack and requires very skilled labor. This type works best if you are looking for something straight and sleek.

With a concrete block retaining wall, you can’t go higher than 4 feet or it will result in a weak structure. If the height isn’t a problem, this would be a great option if you want to create a retaining wall with curves that looks uniform and attractive.

Stone

You might want a stone retaining wall if you are looking for something more modern and unique. You can choose to have either a rubble, cut stone, or boulder retaining wall, depending on what size and style you want the stones to be. They also come in a variety of different natural colors and shades so you can mix and match to get exactly what you envision. On the other hand, stone walls can take a longer time to build, be more expensive, and typically can’t go higher than 4 feet.

Wood

If you are looking for a retaining wall that is quicker and easier to install, wood might be your best bet. Wood retaining walls blend seamlessly into your landscape and can match almost any style of home well. Unfortunately, you will have to worry about the wood rotting over time, but if installed and taken care of correctly, they can last for more than 20 years!
