Repotting Your Plants in 5 Easy Steps

October 30, 2021

Learning how to repot a plant is simple and a useful skill when learning how to maintain your green thumb.

Grab your pots, plants, garden trowel, soil, and gloves, and get ready to rehome your beloved plant so it can keep growing happily and healthily with these easy steps:

Step 1: Fill your new pot with potting soil.

Pick up your garden trowel and start adding layers of new potting soil to your new pot. Depending on the size of your pot, you should use at least four to six inches of soil as a buffer to keep the roots from reaching the pot.

Step 2: Carefully remove your plant from its pot.

Gently tap on the bottom of the pot with your garden trowel to loosen it. Then carefully grab the base of the plant, turn the pot sideways and then slide the plant out. If the plant doesn’t come out with ease, try positioning the stems between your fingers and let gravity help by turning the pot upside down; just be ready to catch your plant.

Step 3: Loosen the plant’s roots.

Use your hand to loosen the plant’s roots a bit. If the roots are matted down, carefully use a scissor or knife to make vertical cuts along the root bed to free up those trapped roots.

Step 4: Place the plant in the pot and add more potting soil.

Now it’s time to rehome your plant into its new home. Be sure the plant is centered on top of the soil, then take your garden trowel and fill in the sides and top with more fresh potting soil. Leave about an inch of space between your soil layer and the top of your pot.

Step 5: Add some water.

Now it’s time to give your newly potted plant lots of water to let it grow and thrive.
