How to Manage Ice On Your Property

December 28, 2021

Ice can be a real hassle for homeowners, and in Connecticut, we’re always bound to get plenty of snowstorms. If you’re looking for ways to better manage ice on your property this winter season, these tips are here to help:

Prepare Hard Surfaces Before Snow Arrives

When it comes to icy weather, preparation before it arrives can go a long way. Buy a de-icing product, like salt, and throw it down on any driveways, walkways, and sidewalks to prevent ice from forming on the ground after a snowfall. Look for an eco-friendly product too that won’t have the potential to harm your plants or pets. Be mindful not to put too much product in one spot.

Shovel Early and Often

During a snowstorm, the quicker and more often you go outside to shovel up the snow, the better the chances you have of ice not being a problem. It may seem like a lot of work, but shoveling or snow blowing multiple times throughout the snowfall is typically safer, easier on your body, and effective for preventing ice formation.

Get Rid of Ice Dams

Ice dams are ridges of ice that form and hang off the edge of your roof. These big formations of icicles may look pretty, but they can pose a hazard not only to you if they fall, but they can also damage your roof, gutters, and even cause leaks. Some ways to safely remove these ice dams include:

  • Hot water: Gently and slowly run hot water over the ice dams to help it gradually melt and drain through your gutters.
  • Use a heat cable: Heat cables can be installed on your roof to prevent ice formation and allow for quick melting of any built-up ice and snow on your house.
  • Remove snow: Ice dams ultimately form when snow on the top of your roof melts and then refreezes by the roof edges. When snow piles up, use a roof rake to safely remove it so ice dams won’t be able to form.
