Ways to Lower the Amount of Mosquitoes in Your Yard

June 17, 2020

Spending time outdoors during the warm weather with friends and family makes for amazing memories and fun times; don’t let pesky mosquitoes ruin it! While it’s impossible to get rid of these unwanted intruders altogether, there are several ways to reduce the amount of them significantly on your property.  Here are some helpful tips:

Get Rid of Standing Water

Female mosquitoes lay their eggs in any standing water, no matter the size. This can include ponds, kiddie pools, birdbaths, buckets of water, or even puddles. Mosquito populations can grow so quickly because females lay up to 400 eggs, and they will be hatched in only two weeks. Reducing the number of standing water spots to get rid of the mosquito breeding sites is the most effective way of controlling the mosquito population on your property.

Treat Standing Water for Mosquitoes

If you do have areas of standing water that you don’t want to get rid of, such as a birdbath, make sure to change the water at least once a week. If you have areas of standing water you can’t get rid of such as ponds, make sure to remove all algae, and use mosquito dunks or bits in the water to help get rid of mosquito eggs.

Plant Mosquito-repellent Grass

There are several types of plants that can be used to deter mosquitoes away from your property. These most effective plants include citronella grass and lemongrass. Citronella and lemongrass oils have been shown to naturally repel mosquitoes making them an effective, eco-friendly way of keeping them off your property.

Increase the amount of Mosquito Predators

Bats and swallows love to feed on mosquitoes. Putting a bat box or birdhouse to attract these predators is another effective and easy way to keep mosquitoes out of your yard.

Get Your Neighbors On Board

An adult mosquito can fly up to two miles from its breeding site and can easily be blown by the wind even further. If your neighbors are on board and also partake in measures to keep mosquitoes off their property, it’s better for everyone!
