Why Spending More Time Outside Will Make You Happier
June 21, 2018
Have you ever heard of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)?
This is a mood disorder that will cause a person to have depression-like symptoms during the cold weather months, or when a person stays inside in the dark for extended periods of time.
While not everyone has this (or do we?), we can all relate to this on some level…
Now that the weather is warm and the sun is bright and shining, start taking yourself outside more often so you can improve your mood. Trust us, you’ll be happier in a flash!
Connecting With Nature Can Boost Your Mood
There is a positive correlation between people who are happy and people who spend an increased amount of time in nature. It is thought that people who spend a large portion of their time outside have more feelings of happiness, as well as a better feeling about their meaning in life.
You can instantly increase your mood by going for a walk, lounging on your patio or beside your swimming pool, grilling some food on the barbecue, or spending some time reading or listening to music beside the fire pit.
Relaxation Station is Ahead
Sure, laying on the couch in front of the TV is relaxing — but have you ever lounged on a chair in the backyard with a drink in your hand and the sun on your face?
It’s been shown that “sitting in green space” can help relieve stress. Clearing your head of any negative thoughts while taking in your surroundings can help lower your heart rate and reduce the levels of cortisol in your body (AKA the chemical that is released when you’re stressed).
Going for a walk (whether that’s around your property, through the woods, or around the block) can also help you relax. Think of a slow stroll as a form of mindfulness and meditation!
Outside of Your Home, Inside of Your Mind
When you spend your days looking at mobile devices, computers, televisions, etc. your brain can fatigue. When this happens, it can be difficult for you to effectively solve problems and think critically.
Taking time to go outside and rest your mind as you sit (or walk) through nature can help relax your mind. This is the perfect thing to do when you get home from work OR in the middle of the workday when you need a small break to rest your brain for a little while.
Critical thinking skills, creativity, and concentration will begin to re-strengthen, allowing you to get back to work with a fresh, new mindset.
