Four Tips For Fall Leaf Cleanup

October 20, 2022

Homeowners: Fall is here, and it’s time to think about how you plan to tackle all the leaves that will fall on your property. Leaf cleanup can be a lot of work, but a proper game plan of what’s best and what’s not can go a long way to getting the job done quickly and easily.

From the CT property maintenance experts at Ambrosio Landscape Solutions, here are four tips to help you handle leaf cleanup like a pro:

Make Sure The Time is Right

When planning the timing for your leaf cleanup, keep a close eye on the weather. It’s best to rake leaves on a dry, cool, and still day without rain or wind. Wet leaves will be heavier and more difficult to manage, while a windy day will make it more difficult to keep your piles neat and tidy.

Protect Yourself

First and foremost, you want to ensure you’re cleaning up your leaves safely. Leaf cleanup, though not typically dangerous, can be a very laborious task, depending on how many trees you have on your property. Wear proper protective gear such as well-fitting, gripping gloves, close-toed shoes, long pants, long sleeves, glasses, and a face mask if needed since dust and pollen will be lifted into the air.

You may be more at risk of injury when using a rake since the repetition can be straining. Protect your back by bending your knees and using your leg strength with each movement. Also, be sure to grab the bar tightly and with some distance between your hands for a stronger grip.

Try The Tarp Technique

If you’re looking for a new way to handle leaf cleanup, give the tarp technique a try! If you have a tarp, lay it out on your lawn and then use a rake or a leaf blower to gather all the leaves on top of the tarp. Next, drag the leaves over to your compost pile or bins for easier disposal.

Don’t Do It All At Once

Leaves will continue to fall throughout the season, and though it may be tempting to wait till your trees are bare to get the task completed all in one day’s work. However, that can be too overwhelming and straining on your body. It’s recommended to spread your leaf cleanup throughout the fall months, doing a little bit at a time to prevent stress and reduce the risk of injury.
