What’s the Best Way to Water My Lawn?
June 13, 2018
Does your lawn not look as green, healthy, and full as you want it to look?
This happens each and every year and you’re probably wondering what you’re doing wrong.
Lawns need a lot of different things from YOU in terms of maintenance, but the most important thing they need is a good watering routine. And we can show you the way!
What’s the Best Way to Water?
The best way to water your lawn is with built-in lawn sprinklers. While this system is a big investment, it’s one that’s worthwhile if you’re going to be living in your home for many years to come.
For those without built-in lawn sprinklers, purchase a pulsating, revolving sprinkler attachment for your hose. Horizontal water dispersion is far more optimal than vertical (AKA oscillating models).
What Time Do I Water?
Watering during the day can be inefficient, as the heat from the sun can evaporate most of the water before the roots soak it all in.
Watering at night will cause fungus to grow, which can lead to lawn disease.
The most optimal time to water your lawn is in the early morning — anywhere from an hour before sunrise until roughly 10 AM. This will give your lawn the opportunity to soak in as much water as it needs, and then the sun can evaporate whatever is leftover.
(For homeowners without a built-in sprinkler system, utilize a timer for your hose and sprinkler attachment so you don’t have to wake up this early each day.)
How Much Should I Water?
You want to water your lawn long enough for at least six inches of soil to become wet. This will allow the deepest roots to be watered, which will result in a thick and healthy lawn.
To know you’ve hit that six-inch mark, keep track of the watering time until the water reaches this point (every lawn is different). You can check by lifting up some of the lawn with your shovel.
Once you establish this timeframe, use this moving forward for your lawn.
How Often Should I Water?
Lawns don’t need to be watered as often as many gardens do. If you’re watering with the right methods for the right amount of time, then you only need to water your lawn two times per week.
Overwatering your lawn can cause roots to not grow as deep, which will lead to a thinner lawn that can die much more easily. Do not be the person that stands outside with the hose each day for 20 minutes — you’re doing more harm than good.
Water every half-week for the right amount of time and you will have a strong, healthy lawn.
What’s the Easiest Way to Take Care of My Lawn?
Taking care of your lawn can seem like a full-time job if you have a busy schedule — especially those without built-in sprinkler systems.
In order to have a green, thick, and healthy lawn, you need to cut, water, aerate, dethatch, fertilize, and de-weed it. The easiest way to do all of this is to allow our pros at Ambrosio to take care of that for you.
