How Your Gutters Are Hurting Your Lawn

Did you know your gutters can affect the health of your lawn?

The gutter system on your home has the important job of redirecting rainwater from your roof. Improper drainage of this water can have a seriously negative impact on the health of your lawn.

Here’s how:

1. Forgetting to Clear and Inspect Your Gutters

Many homeowners will fail to clear out and inspect their gutter systems this fall. Failing to clear out your gutters will lead to future rainfall pooling over onto the roof and onto the lawn below. The gutter system as a whole should also be inspected to ensure there is the proper slope for water to drain and no gaps or cracks where water can escape.

2. Water Will Begin to Pool and Overflow

When water begins to pool within the gutters (due to clogs or improper slope), it can damage the roof by causing roof leaks and begin to pour over the sides to the lawn below. Water can also pour onto the property below when there are breaks, cracks, and gaps present on the gutters and downspouts.

3. Flooding Will Take Place at the Foundation

A broken gutter system that is overflowing from the top and pouring out from gaps in the downspouts will lead to property flooding. An effective gutter system will channel all of this rainwater to a specific area for drainage, while a damaged one will cause this water to flood your lawn.

4. Your Lawn Will Suffer

Once the lawn begins to experience flooding, the grass in the affected area will more than likely begin to die (even while dormant). While you might not see your lawn dying, you will become fully aware when it doesn’t begin to regrow in the spring. Prevent having to revive your lawn in the spring by making sure your gutter system is cleared, properly installed, with a clear drainage area for the rainwater.
