Shoveling snow is arguably one of the last things anyone wants to do during the winter.
It’s cold, snow is heavy, and a cup of hot chocolate sounds much better inside than it does outside. Though most of the time, this isn’t the case, and we can’t escape the harsh reality of some winters.
Should you need to shovel the white stuff off of your property this year, there are a few things to note, and a number of tips you can try to help the process move along, so you can get back to that hot cocoa.
- Wax Your Shovel. Not literally, but the concept is there. Take some cooking spray, and give the face of your shovel a spritz. Because of the slipperiness of the spray, snow won’t stick and will fall off of the shovel easier than it would without. This can make the process much easier in the long run.
- Don’t Lift Too Much. Watching your movement is a key component in staying safe. By lifting too much with your back, you run the risk of injury and premature fatigue. Instead, alternate your grips, lift with the shovel close to your body, and shovel in layers, if the snow is too deep. This will place less strain on your back, leaving more time for you to get rid of the white stuff.
- Stay Warm. Though this should be a no-brainer, many fail to consider the time spent outside, and how the cold can affect their body. Instead of tossing any old sweats and a jacket on, layer up and make sure that your body is safe from all snow. It’s also a good idea to ensure that you have enough mobility to actually shovel, which will help with the right movements needed to prevent injury.
- Use A Tarp. While this might sound a little wacky, a tarp can be one of the best ways to get rid of snow the easy way. Place a tarp down before it snows in an area where you’d typically begin shoveling. Weigh each corner down, and leave it. After the snow has subsided, grab the ends of the tarp and pull away from the area. You should effectively be able to take all of the snow with you, and move it to a better spot. This can be done by pulling with your own weight. Or tying the end to your car or truck and driving away.
